Since 2017 Apple devices have saved images in whats called a HEIC format. While this format brings improvements to image standards it is not as compatible with a range of non apple devices.

Converting these images by a receiver requires licensed software.

The simplest approach is for the sender to convert their images whenever they are sending images to other people. The below guide will show the settings that can be changed. If someone has sent you a HEIC image please refere them to this guide and have them re-send the files after making the changes.

On your phone we recomend the below setting to be set to Automatic

  1. Open the Settings app and tap Photos.

  2. Scroll down to the bottom option, titled ‘Transfer to Mac or PC’.

  3. You can choose either Automatic or Keep Originals.
If you choose Automatic: iOS will convert to a compatible format, ie Jpeg.
if you choose Keep Originals: iOS will share HEIC files regardless of compatibility.

For phots that are on a Mac, perform the following to save them as Jpeg.

  1. In the Photos app  on your Mac, select the item(s) you want to export.

  2. Choose File > Export > Export [number] Photos.

  3. Click the Photo Kind pop-up menu and choose the file type for the exported photos.

    • JPEG creates small files suitable for use with websites and other photo apps.

    • PNG is another lossless file format popular for web images.

  4. To specify the size, quality and other export options for a specific file type, click the down arrow  beside the Photo Kind pop-menu, then select the options you want:

    • JPEG Quality pop-up menu (JPEG files only): Choose a resolution (the number of pixels in the exported image), which affects display and printing quality.

    • Size pop-up menu: Choose the size of the exported image.

  5. Click the File Name pop-up menu and choose how to name the exported files (this step is optional).

You can name your exported files using the titles you’ve given them in Photos, their filenames, or a filename numbered sequentially. If you choose Sequential, you can specify text to appear before each number (for example, Birthday - 1, Birthday - 2, and so on).

  6. Click Export.

  7. Choose where to save the exported photo files, then click Export.
